.
Woolley and Wallis just got a great result. This 1796 Pole Half Cent (it was found in matchbox) sold for £185,000 - that's 362% above the estimate!

I don't think my house is worth that much - what a great story. I read somewhere that the matchbox sold separately.

Rare US coins are always big business

Probably down the back of some 18th century sofas!

1400 produced originally - where are the other 1380?

I guess if you're in the market for a £185,000 coin, you'll hear about the auction wherever it is.

In our opinion items of this quality sell themselves regardless of geographic location. Less than 20 known to exist

It was bought by an American bidder.

Looks to be in lovely condition too. Wouldn't they have got more for it in the States?

Yes, that's the one. Kept in a matchbox by the previous owner. A poignant story as he died in a climbing accident aged just 20. Now known as the 'Mark Hillary' coin in his memory

Was this the one in the matchbox? I remember reading about this prior to the sale. Fantastic result, especially for a UK auction.
