Steven Tyler's Hennessey Venom GT Spyder to sell for charity at Barrett-Jackson
A Hennessey Venom GT Spyder sports car owned by Aerosmith singer Steven Tyler will cross the block for charity at next year's Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale sale.
Based on a heavily modified Lotus Exige chassis, the record-breaking car was initially launched in 2011 and to date just 12 Venom GTs have been built - of which six are Spyder convertibles.
"Steven called me when he was in the Houston area filming a local audition for ‘American Idol’ and asked if we had a Venom GT he could see and drive briefly," said John Hennessey, owner of Hennessey Performance Engineering.
"I took my family to meet him at his hotel and thought we might get to see him for 10 to 15 minutes. Two hours later he was still telling jokes and singing songs with our kids! We fell in love with Steven and he fell in love with the Venom GT. He asked us if we could build his Venom as a convertible. We delivered Steven’s Venom GT Spyder – our first convertible – a few months later."
Tyler's car is now expected to fetch a six-figure sum, with 100% of the result to benefit Janie’s Fund, an initiative created by Tyler in partnership with Youth Villages which offers hope and healing for vulnerable girls across the U.S who have suffered the trauma of abuse and neglect.
In March 2016 the Hennessey Venom GT Spyder set a new world speed record for a street legal car, when it hit a top speed of 265.6 mph (427.4 km/h) at the Naval Air Station Lemoore in California.
With a 7.0-liter V81 engine producing 451 hp and 1,287 lb•ft, the Venom GT is also the second most powerful car currently in production, behind the Bugatti Chiron.
"Charity car sales create some of the most memorable moments from our Scottsdale auctions," said Craig Jackson, chairman and CEO of Barrett-Jackson.
“This past January, we had the VIN #001 Acura NSX, benefiting the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation and Camp Southern Ground, and last year we sold the VIN #001 Ford GT350R with the entire hammer price going to support the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.
"A world-renowned celebrity like Steven Tyler donating a car as rare and desirable as the Hennessey Venom GT Spyder will undoubtedly be the next great moment for charity cars in Scottsdale, and I’m proud that Barrett-Jackson can be a platform to support a wonderful cause like Janie’s Fund."
The Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale sale takes place at WestWorld of Scottsdale, Arizona on January 14-22.
