RM Sotheby's ended 2015 in stunning style, with its record-breaking Driven by Disruption sale in New York.

Thirty one remarkable vehicles crossed the block in front of a packed saleroom, with additional bids flying in from 18 different countries around the world. As the hammer came down on the final lot after almost three hours, the sales total stood at more than $73.5 million.

The biggest result of the evening, and indeed the year, was achieved by an ex-Works 1956 Ferrari 290 MM. One of only four examples ever built, the car was driven to fourth place in the 1956 Mille Miglia by motorsport legend Juan Manuel Fangio, and was later raced by the likes of Alfonso de Portago, Phil Hill, Wolfgang von Trips, Eugenio Castellotti, Luigi Musso and Masten Gregory.

Having been described as "one of the most desirable and valuable cars that will ever come to the open market", the car sold for $28.05 million, making it the most expensive automobile sold in 2015.

Another car which rewrote the record books was a 1962 Aston Martin DB4GT Zagato, one of only 19 examples, which became the most valuable British car ever sold at auction with a final price of $14.3 million.

Perhaps the most visually stunning vehicle on offer was a hand-painted 1964 Porsche 356 C 1600 SC Cabriolet originally owned by rock star Janis Joplin. Featuring a psychedelic mural entitled 'The History of the Universe', the car captured the wild spirit of 1960s San Francisco and sold for a model record $1.76 million.

Further top lots included a 1958 Ferrari 250 GT Cabriolet Series I which sold for $5,720,000; a 1933 Pierce-Arrow Silver Arrow which realized $3,740,000; and a 1954 Siata 208S Spider which achieved $1,650,000.

“We are thrilled that last night in New York, the historic 1956 Ferrari 290 MM sold for $28 million to set a series of records: for a car sold at auction in 2015, for a car sold in New York City, and for a car sold by RM," said Ian Kelleher, Managing Director, RM Sotheby’s West Coast Division.

"The Driven by Disruption sale caps off a record year for RM Sotheby’s with 31 of the world’s finest motor cars redefining a series of auction benchmarks. We were proud to provide a glimpse into the exciting world of collector cars for many new clients, and thrilled by the public’s response.”
