A historically important 1948 Tucker 48 will lead a selection of American automobiles at an upcoming Auctions America sale in Florida.

The Tucker 48 was the brainchild of engineer and businessman Preston Tucker, who sought to take on the nation's biggest car manufacturers with his own design. Today these cars are renowned for their innovative features and Art Deco styling, but it's their rarity that makes them highly sought-after by collectors.

Between 1947 and 1948 the Tucker car Corporation built just 51 cars, before the company folded due to a combination of negative publicity, design issues and pressure from rival car manufacturers. Just 47 examples survive to this day, with many on display in museums or stored away in private collections, making their appearance at auction a major event.

"The offering of any Tucker at public auction is significant given the marque’s short-lived history and limited production," said Donnie Gould, president of Auctions America. "The restoration quality of this example is truly second-to-none – there hasn’t been a comparable example offered at auction in some years.

"We’re thrilled to be offering a car so ingrained and celebrated in American automotive history as the Tucker in Fort Lauderdale, which is again shaping up as a must-attend event for enthusiasts of all stripes."

The Tucker on offer was originally built as a factory test chassis for the company's automatic transmission, and has been completely restored and rebuilt by enthusiasts. Having recently won 'Best in Class' at the 2015 Concours d’Elegance of America at St. John’s, the car will now be offered with an estimate of $950,000-$1,250,000.

Further notable American classics on offer at the sale include a multiple award-winning 1954 Buick Skylark Convertible, estimated at $175,000-$200,000; a 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air Convertible estimated at $90,000-$100,000; and a matching-numbers 1965 Shelby GT 350 Fastback estimated at $350,000-$450,000.

The Auctions America Fort Lauderdale sale takes place at the Greater Fort Lauderdale/Broward County Convention Center on April 1-3.
