Rare Ferrari auction brings over $75 million in Italy

An RM Sotheby's sale of rare Ferraris has realized a remarkable total of more than $75 million.

The auction, which took place at the Ferrari factory in Maranello, Italy, was held to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the legendary automobile marque.

In total, 38 cars crossed the auction block, along with a wealth of historic memorabilia, achieving a sell-through rate of 92.5% and a result of €63,068,110 ($75.4 million).

The highest price of the event was secured by a one-of-a-kind 2017 LaFerrari Aperta, which sold for €8,300,000 ($9.91 million), with 100% of the proceeds benefitting Save the Children.

Vintage 1950s Ferraris also proved popular, with four examples claiming places amongst the top 10 results: a 1959 Ferrari 250 GT LWB California Spider by Scaglietti which sold for €7,855,000; a 1958 Ferrari 250 GT Cabriolet Series I which sold for €4,719,000; a 1955 Ferrari 750 Monza which fetched €3,375,000; a a 1953 Ferrari 250 Europa Coupé which realized €2,871,000.

One of the sale's most notable lots was a 1969 Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona Berlinetta Alloy, discovered in a Japanese barn after being lost for more than 40 years.

The car was the only road-going alloy Daytona ever built, offering collectors a unique opportunity to own a piece of Ferrari history, and sold for a record-breaking €1,807,000 ($2.15 million).

Elsewhere there were seven-figure results for a 1985 Ferrari 288 GTO (€3,263,000), a 1966 Ferrari 275 GTB Alloy (€2,927,000), a 1973 Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona Spider (€2,479,000), a 2004 Ferrari Enzo (€2,311,000) and a 2017 Ferrari LaFerrari Prototype (€2,129,560).

"It has been a fantastic experience to return to Maranello and to conduct a sale in the company’s 70th anniversary year," said Augustin Sabatié-Garat, car specialist at RM Sotheby’s.

"The atmosphere throughout the whole weekend has been incredible and it was clear that buyers were keen to secure the very cars that we had on offer.

"The sale exceeded all our expectations and the enormous sum raised for charity through the sale of the LaFerrari Aperta was a wonderful way to end the evening. We would like to thank our friends at Ferrari for all their assistance and cooperation over the past few months."
