We take a look at 10 of the best affordable classic car investments

10. Renault 5 Turbo GT

The pint-sized Renault 5 Turbo GT remains an affordable way to break into the classic car market, with examples ranging in price from less than £1,000 up to £8,000 (naturally you get what you pay for).

The market is beginning to pick up significantly, with the result that investing now could pay dividends further down the road.

9. Alfa Romeo GTV

While the visage of the Alfa Romeo GTV is a little love it or hate it, the price is incontestable. Prices range in value from around £1,000-2,500 for a used model.

8. Lotus Europa

Lotus Europas are rare (only 9,300 were ever built), but significantly more affordable than the Elan or Esprit (it’s possible to find good examples for £8,000).

This may have something to do with the fact that it looks a bit like a hearse, albeit it one capable of speeds up to 120mph.

7. Volvo 121/131 Amazon

If someone asked you to draw a classic car, it would probably look a lot like Volvo 121/131 Amazon. The model’s smooth, clean lines and vintage stylings have endeared it to collectors – with the result that they hold their value well.

In addition you can have one for around £5,000.

6. Opel GT

This model has those classic sports car good looks and carries a reputation for superior performance at a relatively low cost, with examples selling for around £7,000-10,000.

5. Mercedes 280 SE

If you can’t afford today’s top of the range, why not go for yesterday’s top of the range? The Mercedes 280 SE was the best of the best back in the 1960s and as a result of the marque’s reputation for quality, they’ve held their value well.

Examples are currently available for around £15,000-20,000, with prices already on the rise.

4. Bentley MK VI/ Type R

It might seem unbelievable, but Bentleys can be more affordable then you might think. The MK VI or the Type R are two examples of saloons by the marque that can be had for around £25,000.

While that might initially seem like a lot for an affordable investment, its worth noting that the price is likely to rise significantly once the market catches on.

3. MK I Ford Escort RS

The MK1 Ford Escort remains hugely popular (who doesn’t love racing stripes), with the result that theres a big market out there. You can pick them up for around £14,000.

2. Fiat X1/9

Made to a design by Bertone, the X1/9 certainly looks the part – and as it turns out it handles pretty well too. Despite their rarity you can pick up a good example for a stellar £2,500.

1. Lancia Fulvia

The Lancia Fulvia remains a highly collectible piece of classic Italian automobile design and can be bought for around £10,000. Molto Bene!
