Lot 191: Author: Provoost, Samuel. Title: Original manuscript sermon for Trinity Sunday. Place Published: New York. Date Published: 1767. Description: 9 leaves. Neatly written on rectos only but for the final leaf which has a few lines continued on the rear. 20x17 cm (8x63/4") later full red morocco, lettered in gilt on front. Lettered on the front of the volume is: "Samuel Provost(sic). First P.E. Bishop of New York and Second of America. Original Manuscript Sermon. 1767." Provoost (1742-1815) matriculated at the University of Leiden in 1764 and became assistant minister at Trinity parish in New York City. He declined to serve as a delegate to the Continental Congress but did serve as the chaplain. On the verso is a list of dates the sermon was delivered, Trinity Sunday 1767, 1771, 1785, 1800. The present volume is listed on page 268 of A History of the Parish of Trinity Church in the City of New York, Part II as having been in the collection of General James Grant Wilson. An old typescript of the sermon is laid in. Condition: Binding rubbed; some foxing; very good.
