Although BAL states that it is unknown whether the gilt lettered or white lettered spine was issued first, Whitman Bennett writes: "Most copies are lettered entirely in white on both front cover and spine; but some few have been found with the spine only lettered in gold - and it is probable they were so stamped in error, being manifestly out of harmony, and are the earlier form. ." -A Practical Guide to American Book Collecting (1663-1940), p. 19. BAL 11882; Sisson & Martens, p. 19. Spine leaning, light wear, ripple to front pastedown endpaper, hinges starting to crack; very good.
