One of the scarcest of Jack London first editions; only 920 copies printed. This copy with the spine imprint in three lines (The / Macmillan / Company). Another copy in this sale has the publisher's imprint in two lines (The Macmillan / Company). Neither the BAL or Sisson & Martens discuss this variation, though they do discuss another variant with a shorter spine imprint reading just "Macmillan", a copy of which is also in this sale. Russ Kingman describes the three variant imprints in his "Collector's Guide to Jack London First Editions." BAL 11898; Sisson & Martens, p. 31; Kingman 16. Only minor wear, slight loss to white stamping on front but far less loss than typically encountered; near fine.
