Lot 830: James (Henry). The Outcry, 1st ed., 1911, publisher's catalogue at end, some light spotting, bookplate of Elizabeth Fee, original green cloth gilt, spine a little faded and rubbed at ends, contained in a modern brown cloth dropover box with red calf label, 8vo. Presentation copy, inscribed to front endpaper: "To dear Lucy Clifford, Henry James, Oct. 11th 1911". Lucy Clifford (1846-1929) was an English novelist, journalist and close friend of Henry James, and recipient of some seventy letters from him. He fully trusted in her discretion as some of the letters were extremely critical of mutual aquaintances and he implored her to burn them after reading them. Along with Jocelyn Persse and Hugh Walpole she received a £100 legacy upon his death in 1916, the only people outside his family to be remembered in this way.
