Lot 77: Author: Chastellux, [Francois J.], Marquis de; Title: Travels in North-America in the Years 1780, 1781 and 1782; Place Published: Dublin; Publisher: Colles, Moncrieffe, White, H. Whitestone, et al.; Date Published: 1787; Description: Two volumes. xv, [1], 462; xv, 430 pp. With two folding copper-engraved maps & two folding copper-engraved plates. (8vo) period calf, morocco spine labels. First Dublin Edition (published the same year as the London Edition).Important observations of America by a French nobleman, first published in much abbreviated form in 1781, with the complete and authorized edition published in Paris in 1786. Howes notes that "in its completed form constitutes the first trustworthy record of life in the United States." Chastellux met with Thomas Jefferson and other luminaries, as well as many common citizens. The two maps are of the eastern seaboard from Philadelphia to below the Chesapeake, and westward to the Allegheny Mountains; and the northeast from Delaware Bay to Portsmouth, New Hampshire. The two plates detail a natural bridge in Virginia with which the author was particularly fascinated. Condition: Some wear and tear to bindings, especially to spines; hinges cracked, Vol. II text block detaching at middle; Harvard Library marks on a few pages; endpapers torn, foxed, and darkened, some darkening and minimal foxing of other pages, a few pencil marks in margins; good to very good in fair bindings.
