Lot 66: Author: Sitgreaves, L[orenzo] Title: Report of an Expedition Down the Zuni and Colorado Rivers Place Published: Washington Publisher: Robert Armstrong, Public Printer Date Published: 1853 Description: 198 pp. Illustrated with 79 lithographed plates, 1 fold-out; large folding map. (8vo) 22x13.5 cm (8?x5?"), original blindstamped cloth, spine lettered in gilt. First Edition. The expedition, consisting of Sitgreaves, Lt. J.G. Parke, Dr. S.W. Woodhouse, R.H. Kern, with Major H.L. Kendrick in command of the escort and Antoine Lerouz as guide, "left Santo Domingo, New Mexico, on August 1, 1851, stopped at Zuni in September, and arrived in San Diego on November 30. Wheat discusses the route of the Sitgreaves expedition and highly praises the map, calling it `a monumental achievement..., generally correct and exceedingly well done.' Provenance: Reese, 7/87. Light shelf wear, spine head a little worn; occasional light foxing to text, map slightly tanned; very good or better, much nicer than usually found, the plates quite clean.
