Lot 464: Cauchy (Augustin Louis). Memoire sur les integrales definies, prises entre des limites imaginaires, 1st edition, Paris, August 1825, errata leaf at rear, scattered minor spotting, IGG bookplate to front pastedown, modern library cloth, some soiling, 4to (259 x 203mm). A good clean copy of this very rare and celebrated memoir in which 'Cauchy began to lay the foundations of the general theory of analytic functions of a complex variable and their integration by residues' (Grattan-Guinness, Landmark Writings in Western Mathematics, chapter 28). 'This paper is considered by many as his most important, and one of the most beautiful in the history of science' (Kline, Mathematical Thought from Ancient to Modern Times, p. 637). (1)
