Lot 423: Author: Cumming, C. F. Gordon; Title: Via Cornwall to Egypt; Place Published: London; Publisher: Chatto & Windus; Date Published: 1901; Description: [4], 361, [1] + 32 ad pp. illustrated with frontispiece. (8vo) grey decorative cloth. Second Edition.Constance Frederica "Eka" Gordon-Cumming was a prolific travel writer and landscape painter who traveled the world and painted over a thousand watercolors. In 1879 she traveled to Hawaii and was among the first artists to paint the active volcanoes. She received much criticism from male writers of the era, perhaps because she did not fit in the traditional Victorian role of women, as she often traveled alone and unaided. This copy bears the bookplate of John Patrick Ford. Condition: Some soiling and rubbing to cloth; hinges cracked, scattered foxing and browning to page edges; else very good. PBA Galleries' Sale 578: Americana, Travel/Exploration, Cartography, African/Asian Americana and Directories Thursday, 28th January 2016 Estimate: $100-150
