First Edition.Constance Frederica "Eka" Gordon-Cumming was a prolific travel writer and landscape painter who traveled the world.. In 1879 she traveled to Hawaii and was among the first artists to paint the active volcanoes. She received much criticism from male writers of the era, perhaps because she did not fit in the traditional Victorian role of women, as she often traveled alone and unaided. This copy bearing the bookplates of John Patrick Ford and the Crockhamhill Book Club in memory of Alexander Innes Shand. Condition: Moderate wear to cloth, rubbing at edges and corners, spines leaning, some corners slightly bumped; hinges cracked, occasional foxing; else very good.
