Lot 412: Author: Craven, Elizabeth; Title: A Journey Through the Crimea to Constantinople in a Series of Letters; Place Published: London; Publisher: G. G.J. and J. Robinson; Date Published: 1789; Description: [6], 327 pp. Folding engraved map, six engraved plates (one folding), 10 or more later illustrations tipped in to margins throughout. (4to) period calf, morocco spine label lettered in gilt. Second Edition (?).Lady Craven, who separated from her husband and traveled alone, eventually married her correspondent, Alexander, the Margrave of Bradenburg-Anspach and Bayreuth. "Lady Craven is said to have been the first woman that descended into the grotto of Antiparos" (Cox). The folding map is: A Map of the Roads of Crim Tartary, the Ancient Chersonesus Taurica. Condition: Some wear and tear to binding; hinges cracked; bookplate on front pastedown; tape repair and a couple small tears to map; some foxing, a few marginal notes in pencil; very good in a good binding.
