Original cloth, 271pp. + publisher's ads.Son of a Baltimore merchant who built the first cotton mill in the South, Tiffany dropped out of Harvard to sail for China in 1844 at age 20. After a "tedious" five-month voyage, he arrived in Canton proposing to study the "aspect, manners, customs, habits and ranks of Chinese life" by "actual contact with the people" - "extraordinary people, the only unchanged representatives of antiquity to be found among civilized beings."
