Lot 40: Author: Judah, Theodore Dehone Title: Report of the Chief Engineer upon the Preliminary Survey, Revenue, and Cost of Construction, of the San Francisco and Sacramento Rail Road Place Published: San Francisco Publisher: Printed by Whitton, Towne & Co. Date Published: 1856 Description: 32, [8] pp. Folding lithographed map (8vo) 21.6x13 cm (8?x5"), 20th century half red morocco & cloth, spine lettered in gilt. Rare, early report on a California railroad by the engineer who was the driving force behind the quest for an intercontinental railroad, a dream he did not live to see completed. A little rubbing to spine and corners, bound without the original wrappers, a few fox spots within; map refolded with some light foxing and offset, a few short splits at folds; very good. Provenance: Reese, 5/99. PBA Galleries' Rare Cartography, Exploration & Voyages Thursday, 3rd December 2015 Estimate: $1500-2500
