(8vo) original brown cloth stamped in gilt. First American Edition.Account by the first European to cross tropical Africa from the Indian Ocean to the Atlantic. Turned down by the Royal Geographical Society when he offered to find Livingstone, he was appointed to lead the expedition to take supplies to Livingstone after Stanley had indeed found him. After a 500 mile journey through the heart of Africa, Cameron heard of Livingstone's death, but pressed on in his exploration. He arranged for Livingstone's belongings and journals to be shipped back to England, and then proceeded to survey Africa's second largest lake, Lake Tantanyika. Condition: Light wear to cloth; hinges cracked; map has extensive tape repairs on reverse; slight darkening of pages; good to very good.
