Osgood; Date Published: 1871; Description: [2], 21 pp. 7 full-page wood engravings from drawings by S. Eytinge, Jr. (12mo) 17.5x11.5 cm (7x4½") original wood-engraved pictorial yellow wrappers.Apparently the first separate edition in book form of Harte's classic, if racist, poem of a gambling Chinaman, and the first publication of it to include the Eytinge illustrations. The poem first appeared in the Overland Monthly, September 1870, then as a series of 9 lithographed cards set in an envelope, published by the Western News Company. There were then two issues as sheet music, an appearance in the Piccadilly Annual, an inclusion in Harte's Poems, and as the present issue. This is BAL's printing B of this edition. BAL 7425. Condition: Light wear to wrappers, previous owner's name in several locations; a bit of yellow coloring added to faces; very good.
