Lot 325: Dibdin (Thomas Frognall). Bibliotheca Spenceriana; or a Descriptive Catalogue of the Books Printed in the Fifteenth Century, and of many First Editions, in the Library of George John Earl Spencer, K.G., 4 vols., 1814-15, full-page plates and numerous of facsimiles of early woodcuts and type, some printed in colour, with loosely inserted 4 page autograph letter signed by Dibdin written to 2 sides only, addressed to Mr. Herring, Bookbinder, 10 Martin St., Leicester Square, "Kensington, Sep. 6, 1815, Mr. Dibdin will thank Mr. Herring to bind these books carefully & skilfully according to directions, and to finish them and send them home by the 1st of next month", torn with some loss, all edges gilt, armorial bookplate of John William Pease to upper pastedowns and related bookplate to lower pastedowns, fine contemporary calf with elaborate gilt and blind decoration, few joints slightly cracked, 8vo. De Ricci, p.76. The first edition of this catalogue describing the library of Lord Spencer, "the finest private collection of books in Europe" (De Ricci). (4)
