Lot 274: Author: N/A; Title: The Chicago City Directory, and Business Advertiser, 1855-6. [bound following] The Northern Counties Gazetteer and Directory, for 1855-56; Place Published: Chicago; Publisher: Robert Fergus; Date Published: 1855; Description: Two volumes in one, as issued. viii, (17)-152, [8]; (xiii)-xxxii, 208, 128, [2] pp. Advertisements on endpapers and within, many with woodcut illustrations. Folding hand-colored map at front. (8vo) 22.5x14 cm (9x5½") original gray cloth-backed printed boards. Scarce pre-fire directory. The hand-colored map at front is titled "Map, showing the Railroads Centering in Chicago." and is surrounded by ads for the N.P. Iglehart Real Estate Company. The second title calls for a "New Map of the City" on the title page but none is present, likely issued separately. Previously in the collection of the Massachusetts Historical Society (an 1857 gift from the Illinois Historical Society) with their bookplate and cancelation stamp. Spear, p.95; Sabin 29760; Howes H57. Condition: Spine sunned, boards lightly worn; small tears at intersections of map folds; foxing; very good.
