Lot 270: Manuscript recipe book. A Valuable Compendium of Culinary Knowledge. Dedicated by Permission to Captain Purvis R.B.M. By His affectionate Sister The Transcriber, 1828, calligraphic title-page, 3pp. index, and 54pp. recipes, e.g. Marble Head, Cowslip Vinegar, Boil'd Custard Pudding, College Pudding, Malagotany Soup, Wellington Puddings, Veal Tendrons, Lobster Pudding, plus a large number of blank leaves, lower hinge split, original red half roan gilt, rubbed and scuffed, 8vo, together with three other manuscript recipe books, one belonging to Emma Williams, Wasperton, Warwickshire, dated 1840, another of a similar date belonging to Anne Langford, Ellesmere, and the third with no ownership but dated 1812 and 1818, plus a commonplace book belonging to Elisabth Althea Heberden (1786-1855), dated 1816, filled with numerous manuscript writings, a few original drawings, and a scissor cut silhouette of children in a garden.
