Small woodcut of Catherine on the title page of the third section, p.459. (12mo) 14.4x7.5 cm (5 3/4 x3 1/4 "), period vellum, inked spine title. The life of Saint Catherine of Siena, the 14th century tertiary of the Dominican Order and a Scholastic philosopher and theologian, who also worked to bring the papacy of Gregory XI back to Rome from its displacement in France and to establish peace among the Italian city-states. she is one of the two patron saints of Italy, together with St. Francis of Assisi. The present work went through a number of contemporary editions or printings, but all are scarce. Condition: Discoloration and rubbing to covers, spine indented so fore-edges are not even; internal aging, title page with a few marginal chips, bookplate, good to very good.
