Lot 232: Author: N/A; Title: Memorial of Thomas Ewing of Ohio - Two copies, inscribed by his daughter to her children with General William Tecumseh Sherman; Place Published: New York; Publisher: Catholic Publication Society; Date Published: 1873; Description: 289 pp. Mounted photographic frontispiece. (Large 8vo) 25x17 cm (10x6½") original publisher's full morocco, ruled in blind, gilt clover devices at corners. Two copies, one in black morocco, the other in brown. First Edition.Each inscribed by Ellen Ewing Sherman, daughter of Thomas Ewing, wife of General William Tecumseh Sherman, and an influential figure in Washington politics herself during the administration of Abraham Lincoln. One copy is inscribed to her son Thomas Ewing Sherman, noted American lawyer, educator, and Catholic priest. The second copy is inscribed to her daughter Maria Ewing Sherman (later Fitch), the oldest child of General and Mrs. Sherman, her bookplate (Minnie Sherman Fitch) on the front pastedown. Also included is a copy book belonging to General Sherman's mother Maria W. Sherman, the first approximately 20 leaves completed in various hands. 24.5x19.5 cm (9¾x7¾"), period full tan calf, Mrs. Sherman's name stamped in gilt on front. Condition: All with some wear, rubbing, etc., brown morocco copy with a number scratched on front cover; very good.
