Lot 229: Author: Watson, Gaylord Title: Watson's New Map of the Western States Territories, Mexico, and Central America Place Published: New York Publisher: Published by Gaylord Watson Date Published: 1869 Description: Lithographed map, hand-colored. 92x71 cm (36 ?x28"), folding into gilt-lettered blindstamped cloth covers 17.5x12 cm (7x4?"). Advertising leaf mounted on inside of front cover. Stunning, beautifully colored map of the western United States from Illinois and Mississippi west to the Pacific, with Mexico and a large inset of Central America. The states are basically in their final configuration, except the Dakotas are still one. The transcontinental railroad is shown, soon after its completion on May 10, 1869, as are other railroads both completed and proposed. Fine or nearly so, a beautiful example. Provenance: Carpenter, 5/03. PBA Galleries' Rare Cartography, Exploration & Voyages Thursday, 3rd December 2015 Estimate: $3000-5000
