Lot 225: Author: Vincent Title: Map of the State of California Compiled from the most recent surveys and explorations. Containing all the latest discoveries and newest towns. By Vincent Place Published: [Paris] Publisher: Printed by Mangeon S Jacques St. Date Published: 1860 Description: Engraved map, hand-colored. Engraved by Ch. Smith. With large engraved panoramic view at top, not colored. 37x49.5 cm (14?x19?"), folding into original cloth covers lettered in gilt "A New Map of the State of California 1860." Rare and unusual map of California, with only five copies listed in OCLC/WorldCat. California is resting on her back, as it were, with east at the top, an engraved "Panorama of San Francisco and Contra Costa" at the top (10x37 cm, and covering over much of San Bernardino County), an inset map of "San Francisco and its surrounding localities" (12x12 cm) at lower right. Wheat says of the map, "Many towns are shown in the mining region, but the map is neither as complete nor as accurate as might have been expected, considering its date. It is, however, a very decorative and charming affair." The Benicia to Marysville railroad and the San Francisco to San Jose railroad are shown. A little browning or soiling in places, a few splits at folds with some neat verso repairs; very good. Provenance: John Howell-Books, 11/77.
