Lot 212: Lyell (Charles). Principles of Geology, being an Attempt to Explain the Former Changes of the Earth's Surface, by Reference to Causes now in Operation, 3 vols., mixed editions, (vol. 1, 2nd ed., and vols. 2 & 3, 1st eds.), John Murray, 1832, 1832 & 1833 respectively, half-title to vol. 3, one engraved frontispiece and two hand-coloured aquatint frontispieces, four engraved maps (2 hand-coloured & 2 folding), wood engraved illustrations and diagrams, some toning & occasional spotting, marginal dampstaining to few plates etc., early 20th century cloth gilt, 8vo, together with a loosely inserted folded & trimmed autograph letter signed by Charles Lyell (1797-1875), "Dear Evans, I send you Mr Rawlins' statement hoping that some day you or Prestwich may be going that way - you need not return it. C. Lyell". Murray published the second edition of vol. 1 in the same year as the first edition of vol. 2. A second edition of vol. 2 was issued at the end of 1832 also. A second edition of vol. 3 was never published, but a uniform third edition in 4 volumes was issued in 1834. The "Evans" refered to in the letter is mostly likely to be and archaeologist & geologist Sir John Evans (1823-1908), who received the Lyell Medal in 1880, This award is given by the Geological Society of London anually.
