Lot 208: Author: Ransom, Leander Title: New Map of the State of California Exhibiting the Rivers, Lakes, Bays and Islands, with the principal Towns, Roads, Railroads and Transit Routes to the Silver Mining Districts of Nevada Territory... Place Published: San Francisco Publisher: Published by W. Holt Date Published: 1863 Description: Lithographed map, hand-colored. 68x54.4 cm (26?x21?"), folding, with original gilt-lettered blindstamped cloth folder (rebacked), 15.8x10.5 cm (6 ?x4"). Scarce and significant map tracing the development of California and the growing silver region of Nevada, an evolving map with somewhat fluid states. There are 4-pp of text, loosely inserted in the covers as is the map, which is expertly backed with tissue. The map designates Lake Tahoe as Lake Bigler, as it was initially named; however, in the Table of Distances the lake is designated as Lake Ta-hoe. Warren Heckrotte notes several states as indicated by Carl Wheat in Mapping the Transmississippi West, concluding that his copy is after Wheat's #1070, dated 1863 but copyrighted 1862, but before #1071, dated and copyrighted 1863, as is the present example, but with more detail in Nevada. This is the Thomas W. Streeter copy, with small TWS bookplate. Folder a little worn, rebacked, map backed with tissue as notes, slight wear at folds; very good. Provenance: John Howell-Books, 10/83.
