Lot 198: Author: Nanitz, Hermann Title: Bancroft's Mercantile Map of San Francisco Place Published: San Francisco Publisher: Published by Bancroft & Company Booksellers and Sationery Date Published: 1868 Description: Color lithographed map. With two insets; the whole map surrounded by advertisements for San Francisco businesses. 119.5x98.5 cm (47x38?") including the surrounding ads; mounted on linen backing. Uncommon and quite fascinating map of San Francisco emphasizing the businesses and commercial activities, with many buildings identified by name and set off by color. The map extends west to just beyond Kearny Street, showing Portsmouth Square, and south to north from the intersection of Harrison and Main to Broadway. The surrounding advertisements are informative and captivating themselves, touting everything from Cuban cigars to "Yankee Notions," and of course fine wines, liquors and beer. The two insets are of South Beach and North Beach. Edges a bit rough, trimmed to or over the neat lines at top and bottom but ads still intact; some rubbing to map surface; generally very good. High Ridge, San Francisco Book Fair, 2/8/03.
