Lot 193: Author: Mitchell, S[amuel] Augustus Title: A New Map of the States of Texas & California, the Territories of Oregon, New Mexico, Utah and the Regions Adjacent: Compiled from the most recent authorities Place Published: Philadelphia Publisher: Date Published: 1851 Description: Engraved map (or lithographic transfer?), hand-colored. 54x48.7 cm (21 ?x19 ?"), folding into original embossed morocco covers lettered in gilt on front, 13.5x8.4 cm (5?x3 ?"). Uncommon issue of the evolving Mitchell map of the American West. There are some issues of it as a wall map, and Wheat lists an 1851 issue as a large inset in the Mitchell map of the U.S. California and Texas are both well defined, but New Mexico encompasses Arizona with pre-Gadsden southern border; Utah stretches from the California border to the continental divide, abutting an enlarged Indian Territory; north of the latter is Missouri Territory, separated by the Rocky Mountains from Oregon. Map with slight darkening in a few places; near fine overall, coloring bright and attractive. Provenance: Richard Hansen, 5/80.
