Lot 171: Thevenot (Jean de). The Travels of Monsieur de Thevenot into the Levant. In Three Parts, viz. Into I. Turkey. II. Persia. III. The East-Indies, 1st English edition, 1687, lacking engraved portrait frontispiece, general title, and 38pp. preface, three engraved plates, occasional minor holes and slight staining, some toning, especially to upper margin, small wormtrack to gutter margin, close trimmed to upper margin, contemporary paneled calf, rebacked, folio. Atabey 1217; Blackmer 1650: "Thevenot began his travels in the Levant in 1655, returning to Paris in 1659 to prepare the first part of his travels for publication, which describes Constantinople, the Archipelago, Asia Minor and Egypt. He left Paris in October, 1663 and travelled through Syria and Persia to India; Thevenot died near Tabriz in 1667. The second and third parts of his voyages were published posthumously by Petis de la Croix and the Sieur de Luisandre." (1)
