Lot 161: Author: James, Will; Title: Uncle Bill: A Tale of Two Kids and a Cowboy; Place Published: New York; Publisher: Charles Scribner's Sons; Date Published: 1932; Description: xii, [2], 241 pp. Illustrated with numerous drawings (mostly full-page), including frontispiece, by Will James. (8vo) original decorative orange cloth, stamped and lettered in black, pictorial jacket. First Edition, Second State.Zane Grey's copy, with his embossed stamp on the front free endpaper. Signed by James on the same leaf, dated '32. This is the first of the Uncle Bill three book series. Second state with galloping horse illustration on p. 181. The first issue, which had an illustration of Scootie's tent instead, is exceedingly rare with only a few copies known. "After on a few of that first state were issued, some long-gone and unimaginative art editor must have ordered a change to a galloping horse running to catch his bunch and having nothing to do with the immediate text. Maybe he couldn't read!...The tent picture is never to be seen again! That first state is very rare" - Frazier p. 64. Condition: Jacket with only light wear; volume fine.
