Lot 158: Author: London, Charmian Kittredge. Title: Typed Letter, signed, to Dawson's Book Shop regarding Jack London's "The Sea Wolf". Place Published: Glen Ellen, CA. Date Published: 11391. Description: Typed letter, signed, on her Glen Ellen "Mrs. Jack London" stationery. 16. 5x21. 5 (6½x8½"). Original envelope present and a small snapshot of Charmian and Jack London is included. Charmian London writes Mr. Charles Yale of Dawson's Book Shop in Los Angeles regarding the ship Sophie Sunderland around which Jack London wove his story "The Sea Wolf" and the numerous incorrect identifications of other vessels and objects as the original ship or its artifacts and the model for London's character: "There seems to be a fever nowadays of ascribing boats a-plenty and other objects as being original Sea Wolf perquisites. And as for the original Sea Wolf himself--many are mentioned but none are correct. About twice a year the original Sea Wolf dies or turns up somewhere. . The man upon whom Jack based a part of his Sea Wolf character, by the way, was Alexander McLean, who died several years ago in Seattle, I believe it was. Anyway, he is dead." Mrs London also requests that the bookseller keep his eye out for first editions of her works. Envelope roughly opened; letter creased from mailing but otherwise fine.
