Lot 157: Author: Goddard, George H. Title: Map of a Survey of the Mokelumne Hill Canal and a Reconnoissance of the Adjoining Country Place Published: San Francisco Publisher: Lith. of Britton & Rey Date Published: [c.1853] Description: Lithographed map. 31.8x57.5 cm (12?x22?"). Rare large-scale map of the mines and communities along the Mokelumne River. Warren Heckrotte notes that "This map is one of the few large scale printed maps at this time of a part of the mining region. The canal was built 1852-1853... The canal was first constructed with wooden flumes. The wood did not stand up and was replaced with a gravel ditch and iron pipes." There are a few ink notations on the map, and in the margins. With rubberstamps indicating withdrawal from University of California. Mounted on linen with some wrinkles, some toning and rubbing; very good overall. Provenance: Burger, Sacramento Book Fair, 1/12/92.
