Lebrun, pictorial head-pieces and large figured initials, several ornamental head- and tail-pieces; large engraved. folding plate in Vol. 2, 3 almost full-page engraved. portraits, a few small text-woodcuts. ?(Folio) 40x24 cm (16x9") early full calf, raised spine bands. With the bookplate of The Earl of Roden, and the signature of English politician Arthur Stanhope (1627-1694) at the top of each title page. First edition of this publication of earliest texts and statutes pertaining to the Merovingian and Carolingian rulers, "a landmark in the history of early medieval law". Etienne Baluze (1630-1718), historian and librarian to Jean-Baptiste Colbert for thirty-three years, was professor of canon law at the Royal College, later its director. Condition: Wear and soiling to bindings with rubbing to extremities, large chip to top of spine of Vol. 1, only remnants of spine labels remaining, joints and hinges cracked; small areas of wormhole damage throughout margins of Vol. 1, not affecting text, tear to front pastedown of vol. 2, a few scattered closed tears or chips to page edges, not affecting text; very good.
