Lot 147: Author: Freeman, James E. Title: Map of Knight's Valley Comprising Part of Rancho Mallacomes or Moristal Y Plan de Agua Caliente in Sonoma County, California, Subdivided for Josiah Hasbrook Esqu. by James E. Freeman, Surveyor August 1870. Wm. H. Martin Agent 316 California St. San Francisco, Cala. Scale 20 chains to 1 inch Place Published: San Francisco Publisher: Date Published: 1870 Description: Ink manuscript map on drafting linen, with boundaries colored. 56.5x72.5 cm (22 ?x28?"). Manuscript map delineating land for sale in the Knight's Valley area of Sonoma County. A large area is outlined in green - likely designating land for sale. A contiguous area outlined in red is labeled Sold. A small town is laid out along County Road - this is probably Kellog. Roads, houses, barns, a hotel, ownership, cultivated fields, vineyards, wine cellars, and acreages are shown in countryside. Section lines are drawn and sections numbered. Hills are designated by hachuring. Rancho Malacomes of four leagues was granted to Jos? de los Santos Berreyesa in 1843. This was patented July 10, 1873, 17,743 acres. The map indicates that Berreyesa and then Hasbrook were selling this land before they could be sure of title. A fascinating look at the heart of Wine Country in the second half of the 19th century. Folds with some wear and minor loss along them, overall very good. Provenance: Butterfields, 9/30/01.
