Lot 141: Author: Ellis, Robert H. Title: Map of the Gold Region of California taken from a recent survey By Robert H. Ellis 1850 Place Published: New York Publisher: George F. Nesbitt Lith Date Published: 1850 Description: Lithographed map, with inset view of San Francisco. 43.7x38 cm (17 ?x15"). Rare and early map of the California gold region, basically a copy of William A. Jackson's seminal 1850 map, but with some notable additions and superior engraving quality. The map locates dozens of towns and Indian villages, numerous bars, and roughly 300 sites labeled as "Workings for Gold". OCLC/Worldcat shows copies also at the Library of Congress and Harvard. Backed with paper, stains at lower right and small one at center, small abraded patch to the inset view; very good. Provenance: Arader, 1/88. PBA Galleries' Rare Cartography, Exploration & Voyages Thursday, 3rd December 2015 Estimate: $6000-9000
