Lot 138: Author: Edwards, R.M. Title: Railroad Map of the City of San Francisco California, Published by Edwards & Co., Late D.E. Appleton & Co., Publisher and Bookseller... Place Published: San Francisco Publisher: Date Published: [c.1875] Description: Lithographed map in red and black. 43.3x49.9 cm. (17x19?"), folding into original cloth covers with paper cover label, 12.5x8.5 cm ( 4?x3 ?"). Scarce little "Railroad Pocket Map" (as designated on the cover label), with the many street railroads indicated. There is text around the edges of the map, in red, describing federal offices, leading hotels, and places of amusement. West is at top of the map, which extends west to First Ave; south to Islais Creek. What is now Columbus Avenue is called Montgomery Avenue, its original name. Montgomery Street is shown extending south to connect with Connecticut. The panhandle of Golden Gate park is labeled Avenue; no sign of the park itself. The Palace Hotel is not in list of leading hotels, which began business in the late 1870's. Thus the date, ca 1875. Cover label a little soiled, the map is detached from the folder, with piece of margin remaining attached; a few slight splits at fold intersections; very good.
