Lot 12: Kitchin (Thomas). A New Universal Atlas, Exhibiting all the Empires, Kingdoms, States, Republics &c. &c. In the whole World. being a Complete Collection of the Most Approved Maps extant...., from the last edition of D'Anville and Robert, 5th edition, published Robert Laurie and James Whittle, 1801, title and index page with slight staining, fifty-nine maps printed on seventy five map sheets, all with contemporary outline colouring, (complete as list), some closed tears to old folds, occasional slight offsetting, near contemporary ownership signature to front pastedown, hinges and joints weak, contemporary half calf, rubbed, frayed and worn, folio. This atlas is spectacular for the sheer scale of some of the maps. Many are on two or even three sheets that if conjoined would be the size of a large scale wall map. Although created by Thomas Kitchin the maps draw on the work of a variety of cartographers including D'Anville, De Vaugondy Dominic Winter's Printed Books, Maps & Ephemera Auction June 2015 Wednesday, 10th June 2015 Estimate: £5000-8000
