Lot 117: Author: London, Jack. Title: Theft: A Play in Four Acts - inscribed copy. Place Published: New York. Publisher: Macmillan Company. Date Published: 1910. Description: xii, (2), 272, (2 blank) pp. Maroon cloth with white cloth spine, lettered in white on front cover, in black on spine, top edge gilt. First Edition, First Issue. Inscribed by London on the front free endpaper: "Dear Stewart, Well, It's Christmas, ain't it? Sincerely yours, Jack London. Glen Ellen, Calif. Christmas 1911." Additionally signed on the front pastedown by the author's daughter Becky London in 1982. The play was written for Olga Nethersole, the popular actress, but it was never produced. One of only three plays Jack London wrote. Only 990 copies printed. BAL 11919; Sisson & Martens, p. 49. Binding lightly worn and shaken, white stamping almost entirely perished from front cover (as typical), small corner clipped from front free endpaper; a few dogeared corners within; very good.
