Author: Baum, L. Frank. Title: The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. Place published: Chicago. Publisher: George M. Hill Co. Date published: 1900. Description: 261 pp. Illustrated by W.W. Denslow with 24 tipped-in color plates (including title page) , plus numerous duotone illustrations in the text. (8vo) original light green cloth pictorially stamped in green and red. First Edition, Second State. All plates present and intact, with two additional plates (originally facing pp. 34 and 92) from the first state laid in. Second State with no box around publisher‘s advertisement; "low wail of..." (p.14, line 1) ; the word "pieces" spelled correctly (p.81, 4th line from bottom) ; p.[227] begins with the words "While The Woodman..."; imperfect type on last line of pp.100; verso of title page with printed copyright notice; colophon reset in 13 lines. The plate facing p.92 without red shading on the horizon; plate called for at p.34 (reinserted at page 20 in this copy) without two dark-blue blots on the moon. Binding State C. Bienvenue & Schmidt p. 6. Condition: Some wear and soiling to cloth with light rubbing to extremities, a bit of fraying to corners and head and heel of spine; newer pastedowns with originals laid down, 2 newer blanks inserted at front and rear between pastedowns and original endpapers, some staining to original front free endpaper, with date stamp: June 23, 1948, some dampstaining to margins of the first four plates, not affecting images, occasional light staining to pages, overall a nice, solid copy; very good.
