JRR Tolkien's first book published
The Story of Kullervo, JRR Tolkien’s first book, is to be released later today.
The work, considered one of Tolkien’s darkest, is a retelling of a Finnish saga.
English professer Verlyn Fleeger transcribed the story from the original manuscript and published it in a journal in 2010. He said: "I began to think that it deserved a wider audience than subscribers to a scholarly journal.
"It's his earliest mythic story, and thus a precursor of all that is to come," said Flieger, who edited the edition.
"It is also undeniably his darkest work, and thus foreshadows the darker and more sombre aspects of his invented world."
It’s a big month for fantasy fans as Terry Pratchett’s final book The Shepard’s Crown, has also recently gone on sale.
