John Christopher ‘Johnny’ Depp II (1963-present) is an American actor and musician.
Described as "the epitome of cool” by the Bio website, Depp has starred in several major films including Chocolat (2000), Sleepy Hollow (1999) and The Pirates of the Caribbean series (2003 onwards).
Depp began his career as musician, but changed direction after meeting Nicolas Cage in Los Angeles.
During his career, Depp has been considered a teen idol and screen rebel. He was also known for a string of celebrity romances in the 1990s and his turbulent private life.
He has won both a Golden Globe and a Screen Actor’s Guild award.
Rare book and manuscript collection
Depp is renowned as a serious collector of rare books and manuscripts, referring to himself as the "guardian" of his collection.
Described as a “bookworm” by Vanity Fair, he is the brother of a novelist and a huge fan of author Jack Kerouac.
In 1991, Depp travelled to Lowell, Massachusetts – Kerouac’s home town. Wanting to get closer to the author, Depp spent time with Kerouac's brother-in-law, John Sampas.
Depp owns a number of letters and manuscripts by Kerouac, as well as his last typewriter.
He also owns work by Welsh poet Dylan Thomas and French poet Arthur Rimbaud.
Depp’s collection is comprised of mostly first edition books, especially the works of the Beat Poets.
Depp also owns several books by American author Edgar Allen Poe, most notably, a first edition of Tales of Mystery and Imagination, complete with original illustrations.
