Lot 35: Author: Caesar, Caius Julius. Title: De Bellis Gallico et Civili Pompejano...Commentarii. Place Published: Leiden & Rotterdam. Publisher: Samuel Luchtmans and Johann Daniel Beman. Date Published: 1737. Description: Edited by Oudendorp. 2 volumes in 1. (xxvi) , 516; (2) , (517) -1035, (33) pp. Additional engraved title page; 3 engraved folding maps; 10 engraved plates (4 folding). (4to) 26x20 cm (10 1/4x8") later full vellum, paneled in gilt, gilt armorial device at centers, spine gilt, lettered by hand. Dibdin describes this edition thusly: "An admirable and truly critical edition, comprehending the labours of Davis, Clarke and Vossius. 'The preceding commentaries on Caesar,' says Harles, 'have all been eclipsed by the skill and researches of Oudendorp; who, by a careful examination of numerous MSS. and editions, has often successfully restored the true ancient reading of his author'" (Dibdin). Bookplate of the Royal Military College. Condition: Some wear to binding, ties lacking, small pull to vellum at one corner; some browning and foxing within; very good.
