Lot 85: (Engravings) Title: Unterhaltungen fur Anfänger in der Zeichenkunst. Heft I-XXIIII (Entertainments for Beginners in the Art of Drawing. Parts 1-24). Place Published: Dresden. Publisher: Verlegts P.C. Hilscher. Date Published: (c.1770s). Description: 24 parts bound in single volume. 141 (of 144) plates. Each part with a separate title page, the part number supplied in manuscript. (Oblong 4to) 20.5x32 cm (8x121/2") early half calf and boards, spine gilt, red and green morocco labels. A rare collection of plates, mostly etchings but a few in other engraved mediums. Numbered in an early hand and apparently lacking three plates from Part 6 (plates 36, 37, & 38). Otherwise appears complete. The number of plates per part varies from 4 to 8. The first 12 plates and title pages of Parts 1 and 2 are trimmed and mounted on to sheets of a size matching the remainder of the pages. Several of the plates are dated in the 1770s. OCLC locates only a single copy of this work at the National Library of Poland, that copy lacking Parts 1 & 2 but including a 25th part not present here and dating the collection, presumably in error, to 1767. Condition: Binding worn, front joint cracked, some spotting to boards; 3 plates removed; some light foxing and soiling within; very good. PBA Galleries' Rare Books & Manuscripts Sunday, 1st November 2015 Estimate: $1000-$1500
