Beatrix Potter recipe book up for sale

An astonishing collection of Beatrix Potter possessions are to be auctioned at Mullocks Auctioneers on September 27th.

The collection includes a 161 year old family recipe book, handed down through generations of Potter’s husband’s family the Heelises and contributed to by several people. The book includes hand-written recipes for sponge cake, ginger bread, roast turkey, marmalade and curry.

It also contains a few financial pages, historical notes, and even some verses. Entries are dated from 1851, but many have been made in later hands, including those of Beatrix Potter’s herself. The guide price is just £200-£400.

The book was discovered among an array of ephemera relating to the Tale of Peter Rabbit author and her husband William Heelis, other items of which shall also be offered by Mullocks. A photograph of Heelis from 1910 at a Lakeland shooting party, never before seen, was taken three years before his marriage to Beatrix. Other items include Heelis family legal documents, financial ledgers, a notebook and a Gaelic New Testament.

Many of Potter’s possessions were sold off at a sale in 1954. This collection comes from the personal effects of her husband, coming with him into the home he and Beatrix made together. The cookery book was likely used often in their day to day lives.

Beatrix Potter remains one of the world’s most adored and famous children’s authors. First edition of her books and original illustrations sell for tens of thousands, sometimes even hundreds of thousands at auction.
