A.A Milne Rare Books And Memorabilia are collectible items relating to the English author A.A Milne.

Brief history/biography

Alan Alexander Milne was born on January 18th, 1882 and died on January 31st, 1956.

Milne was an English author best known for penning the Winnie-the-Pooh series as well as various different children's poems, non-fiction books, articles, novels, newspaper articles, book introductions, children stories, poetry, screenplays and plays.

Milne also started writing humorous and witty verses and essays to Punch before being hired as the assistant editor for the publication in 1906. It was during this time that he met the Punch staff cartoonist E. H. Shepard, who illustrated many of Milne's future work including Winnie-the-Pooh and The House at Pooh Corner (1928).

Books

  • Christie's in New York sold first edition copies of When We Were Very Young (1924), Winnie-the-Pooh (1926), Now We Are Six (1927), and The House at Pooh Corner (1928) all of which were signed by Milne and Shepard for $11,500 in December of 1993.

  • Sotheby's in New York sold an early edition copy of When We Were Very Young, Winnie-the-Pooh, Now We Are Six and The House at Pooh Corner along with illustrations by E. H. Shepard for $21,600 in June of 2004.

  • Swann Galleries in New York sold a complete set of the signed and limited Christopher Robin books including When We Were Very Young and Now We Are Six for $26,000 in November of 2004.

Heritage Auctions in Dallas, Texas sold:

  • The first edition copy of The House at Pooh Corner (1928) on Japanese vellum which were also signed by Milne and Ernest H. Shepard for $22,000 in June of 2008.
  • The first edition copies of When We Were Very Young (1924), Winnie-the-Pooh (1926), Now We Are Six (1927) and The House at Pooh Corner (1928) for $12,500 in June of 2010.

Sotheby's in London sold:

  • The complete set of first edition copies of the Winnie-the-Pooh books (1924-1928) for £18,000 in December of 2004.
  • The first edition copy of The House At Pooh Corner which was printed on Japanese vellum and also signed by Milne and Shepard for £12,000 in December of 2004.
  • The complete set of first edition copies of the Winnie-the-Pooh books (1924-1928) for £11,400 in July of 2005.
  • The complete first edition set of the Winnie-the-Pooh books for £14,400 in July of 2006.

  • Freeman's in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania sold the first edition copy of When We Were Very Young (1924) which was signed by Milne and Shepard for $14,000 in September of 2005.

  • PBA Galleries in San Francisco, California sold the first edition copy of When We Were Very Young (1924) which was also signed by Milne and Shepard for $10,000 in August of 2010.

  • Profiles in History in Calabasas Hills, California sold the first American edition copies of Winnie-the-Pooh, Now We Are Six, The House at Pooh Corner, and //The Christopher Robin Story Book which were signed by Milne for $10,000 in December of 2009.

Guide for collectors

There are only 20 known first edition copies of The House At Pooh Corner (1928) which were printed on Japanese vellum, thus are considered to be extremely rare. First edition copies of the complete set of the Winnie-the-Pooh books are considered to be the most valuable.

Memorabilia that was signed by both Milne along with illustrator Shepard is also considered valuable.
Restoration of a first edition copy of any of Milne's books is not recommended.
