(4to) 25x19 cm (93/4x71/2") original calf, with gilt crest of The Society of Writers to the Signet at center of front and rear cover, plus gilt-lettered leather spine label and gilt-decorated spine panels. First Edition. Mairan proposes that the aurora were vapors from the sun that entered Earth's atmosphere. This treatise is published as Suite des Memoires de l'Academie Royale des Sciences for the year 1731. Condition: Front cover nearly detached, some surface wear and faint soiling to covers; neat rubberstamp of Pennsylvania State Univ. Library on verso of title page, lighty foxed page edges; very good overall.
