Western Flyer tricycles were produced by the American bicycle manufacturer Western Flyer during the mid-20th century.

History & Description

Western Flyer was a subsidiary of the Western Auto Supply Company, which was founded in 1909 by George Pepperdine. Originally the company consisted of a chain of automotive parts stores across the United States but started to expand to other products in the early-1920s. Around 1930, the company entered the bicycle industry and formed its own bicycle division called Western Flyer.

Although the Western Auto Supply Company owned Western Flyer, its bicycles and tricycles were produced by other manufacturers, such as Huffy and Murray. However, regardless of who produced them, they all were distributed under the Western Flyer name.

Western Flyer tricycles were manufactured from the 1930s through to 1959 when the division was discontinued. Throughout its three decade lifespan, Western Flyer was recognised for manufacturing quality products at reasonable prices.

Guide for collectors

Vintage Western Flyer tricycles are very rarely sold through national auction houses. Instead, collectors are much more likely to purchase these products from eBay.

There are a number of online forums that specialise in vintage tricycles that are a good source of information for collectors. A few examples include; Tricycle Fetish, Vintage Western Flyer Tricycle and The Cabe.

Prices for Western Flyer tricycles depend on the item’s model, its condition and original manufacturer.
